What OtterDex is

OtterDex is a website and a phone app. The website publishes a catalogue of trading card printings — Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Disney Lorcana and the One Piece Card Game — with what each printing has been selling for. The app points a phone’s camera at a card, works out which printing it is, and keeps a collection on that phone. Using either means these terms apply to you.

The app is not on the App Store or Google Play yet. Until it is, everything below about the app describes what is being built, and everything about the subscription describes something nobody can buy. The website works today and these terms cover it now.

Prices are estimates, not appraisals

Every price here is a market figure taken from a public feed, shown with its source and the date it was taken. It is an informational estimate for hobbyists. It is not an appraisal of the copy in your hand, not a guarantee that anybody will pay it, not an offer to buy or sell anything, and not a basis for insurance.

Condition moves a real sale a long way from a feed’s number: a card that has been played is worth less than one that has never left its sleeve, and neither a scan nor a catalogue can judge the card you are holding. What you do about buying, selling, insuring or valuing a card is your decision, and the consequences of it are yours.

The subscription

There are two paid plans, Standard and Collector. Each runs for one year and renews automatically for another year at the end of each term unless you cancel first. Standard raises the 100-card limit on a collection to 1,000 and adds price history to every card you own. Collector removes the limit and adds a chart of what the whole collection has been worth over time. Scanning, what a card is worth today, and export are free on every plan, always. There is no other tier, no monthly term and no trial. Moving between the two is handled by the store as an upgrade or downgrade of one subscription; you are never charged for both at once.

It is sold and managed by the App Store or Google Play, not by us. The price is the store’s, shown in your own currency on the store’s own screen at the moment you buy — which is why no figure is printed on this page, and why one printed here would be wrong in every country but one. The store takes the payment, holds your payment details, and issues the receipt.

Cancelling is one tap: Manage subscription in the app’s You tab opens the store’s own subscription screen, and the same screen is reachable from your phone’s account settings without opening OtterDex at all. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not shorten a term you have already paid for. Refunds are the store’s to give under its own policy — we never see the payment and cannot issue, reverse or look one up.

If a subscription lapses, nothing is taken from you. The collection stays on the phone, readable and exportable, and a restore from a file still works; only adding and editing beyond the free limit stops.

There is no account

You never give OtterDex a name, an email address or a password, so there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to close. Your collection is a database on the phone that scanned it. It is backed up with the rest of your phone, and the app writes a copy of it to a file whenever you ask.

That means we do not hold your collection, cannot restore it for you, and cannot recover it if the phone is lost and you kept no copy of your own. Keeping that copy is the one piece of housekeeping the product asks of you. Deleting the app deletes the collection with it, and that is how you stop using OtterDex. Privacy describes everything the app sends, everything kept and for how long.

Using it reasonably

Scan cards, look things up and keep a collection: that is what it is for, and none of it costs anything. What it is not for is automating requests against the service, copying the catalogue in bulk, or redistributing or reselling the data behind it — the card data is not ours to license to you, and the sources it comes from have their own terms.

Scanning carries a daily ceiling on the scans our server has to read for you, and a second ceiling across the whole service. Both sit far above what anybody does in an afternoon, both reset at midnight UTC, and both exist to stop a script running up our costs rather than to sell you anything — the free plan is capped on the size of a collection, never on an answer. Requests are rate-limited for the same reason.

Where the catalogue comes from

None of the card data, the pictures or the names are ours. Every source, and the trademarks that come with it, are named in the footer at the bottom of this page, and that paragraph is the attribution rather than a second version of it written here. Those sources’ own terms govern their data.

OtterDex is unofficial Fan Content permitted under the Wizards of the Coast Fan Content Policy, and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or produced by Wizards of the Coast, Nintendo, Creatures Inc., GAME FREAK Inc., Konami, Disney, Ravensburger, Shueisha or Bandai. Card names, set names, symbols and artwork belong to their owners and appear here only to identify the printings the catalogue describes.

What it does not promise

OtterDex is provided as it is. The catalogue is assembled nightly from other people’s data and it will sometimes be wrong: a printing that is missing, a price that is stale, a scan that reads the wrong card or no card at all. We do not promise that the service is available, uninterrupted or accurate, or that a scan will identify a card correctly. To the extent the law allows, there are no warranties of any kind, express or implied.

A wrong printing is the one mistake this product most wants to hear about, and Support says how to report one.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, OtterDex is not liable for what you lose by relying on it — a card sold for less than it was worth, a card bought for more, or a collection lost with a phone that had no saved copy. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to what you have actually paid for a subscription in the twelve months before the claim, which for most people is nothing.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein, and any dispute about them belongs to the courts there.

Changes

These terms change when the product changes, and the date below moves with them. Carrying on using OtterDex after that means the new terms apply. Anything that actually affects you — a new charge, a new thing collected — will be said plainly rather than dated quietly. Questions go to the address on Support.
