Privacy

OtterDex is built to know as little about you as possible. This page says exactly what it does know, and for how long.

There is no account

You never give OtterDex a name, an email address or a password. Nothing on the website or in the app asks you to sign in, and there is no server-side record of who you are.

Your collection stays on your phone

The cards you scan are stored in a database on the device that scanned them. That database is backed up with everything else on your phone by your phone's own backup, and it is never sent to OtterDex. When you save a copy of your collection, the file is written to the folder you choose and stays there.

What the app sends to our server

The app asks our server two questions. Neither needs to know who is asking.

  • Which card is this? Your phone first reads the set code and collector number off the card itself, with the text recognition built into iOS or Android, and sends only those few characters to be looked up. When the phone cannot read them, the photo is sent to our server, which passes it to an AI model to read the text printed on the card. The photo is used for that one reading. OtterDex does not store it, and the model provider processes it under its own API data policy. Nothing that identifies you is sent with it.
  • What are these worth? The app sends the catalogue identifiers of the cards you hold and receives today's prices. This request is answered and not recorded.

The one identifier there is

The app generates a random identifier the first time it runs and keeps it in the phone's secure storage. It is sent with each scan so that a single device cannot run an unlimited number of scans in a day, which is what stops a script from running up our costs. It is not linked to you, to your phone's hardware identifiers or to any account, and it can be reset by deleting the app.

Each scan leaves a record of that identifier, the outcome, the card matched if any, a confidence figure and how long it took. Those records are deleted after thirty days. Photos are never part of them.

Payments

Subscriptions are sold by the App Store or Google Play. They take the payment, hold your payment details and issue receipts. OtterDex never sees your card number or billing address. Whether you have paid is checked on your phone against the store's own receipt, not against a server of ours.

The website

otterdex.com sets no cookies and runs no analytics, advertising or tracking scripts. Our hosting provider keeps ordinary server logs, which include the IP address and the page requested, for a short period to run and secure the service. Card pictures and set symbols are loaded from the catalogue sources named in the footer, which see the request for the image.

Children

OtterDex is not directed at children under thirteen and does not knowingly collect information from them. Since there is no account, there is nothing to collect.

Changes

If what OtterDex sends or keeps ever changes, this page changes with it, and the date below moves. Questions about any of it can go to support@otterdex.com.
