Which games does OtterDex cover?

Five: Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Disney Lorcana and the One Piece Card Game. Every printing of every set the catalogue holds cards for is on this site, priced daily. The catalogue lists them with their counts.

The app currently scans Magic and Pokémon. The other three are on the website first because a scanner has to be taught what each game prints along its bottom edge, and it would rather say nothing than read a card wrong.

Scanning

The scan could not read my card

OtterDex reads the line of small print along the bottom edge of the card: the set code and the collector number. It needs that line to be in the picture, in focus and lit evenly. The three things that most often stop it are glare off a sleeve, a steep angle, and a shadow across the bottom edge. Take the card out of its sleeve, hold the phone flat above it, and try again.

Cards printed before collector numbers existed, which for Magic means before 1998, have no line to read. For those, OtterDex reads the name and shows you every printing of it. You pick the one you are holding.

When more than one printing fits what was read, OtterDex asks rather than guesses. The difference is usually the set symbol or the border. Compare the pictures with the card in your hand.

Is there a limit on scanning?

Scanning is free on every plan, whether or not you have subscribed. There is a daily ceiling set far above what anyone does in an afternoon, which exists only to stop automated scripts. If you reach it, it resets at midnight UTC.

Your collection

Where is it stored?

On your phone, and nowhere else. It is included in your phone's own backup. To keep a copy you control, open the You tab and choose Save a copy. The file it writes holds every card in full, so it can be restored with no signal, on a new phone, or years from now.

Restoring from a file

Restore from a file merges the file into what is on the phone. Where the same card appears in both, the larger quantity wins, so restoring the same file twice never doubles a collection and an old backup never deletes what you added since. Replace everything with a file does what it says, and asks first.

Moving to a new phone

Save a copy on the old phone, put the file somewhere the new phone can reach, then restore it there. A restore ignores the free plan's card limit.

The subscription

What does Standard change?

The free plan holds 100 cards. Standard removes that limit and adds price history to every card you own. Scanning, today's prices and export are free on both, always.

How do I cancel?

Subscriptions are sold and managed by the App Store or Google Play. Manage subscription in the You tab opens the store's own screen, where cancelling is one tap. If your subscription lapses, nothing is taken from you: the collection stays readable and exportable, and only adding and editing beyond the free limit stops.

I paid but the app says Free

Open the You tab and choose Restore purchases. The app checks the store's receipt on the phone itself. If the store shows an active subscription and the app does not, write to us with the platform and the date of purchase.

Prices

Where do the prices come from?

Each price is a market figure from a public feed, shown with its source and the date it was taken. It is an informational estimate for hobbyists, not an appraisal of the copy in your hand. Condition matters: a card that has been played is worth less than one that has never left its sleeve, and no scan can judge that.

A card or a price is wrong

Tell us. Include the set code and collector number printed along the bottom edge of the card, and what you expected to see. A wrong printing is the one mistake this product most wants to hear about.
